Pousada de Tavira, a southern Portuguese treasure.

The town of Tavira is  well known for its fantastic island beach and its lively restaurant scene. A hot summer destination for those who come from all over the world looking to relax and enjoy  a bit of  Algarvian paradise. Right  in the center of its historic Jewish quarter stands the  enchanting Pousada de Tavira, a retreat from all the action that is perfect for those who want to have the best of both worlds.

Founded in 1542,  its gorgeous building will give you a glimpse of what it was like  to stay in a  XVI century cloister. And although it has been completely refurbished inside, you’ll still see vestiges of its past that add to the unmistakable surreal experience of staying in, what I dare to call, a celestial setting of sorts.

The courteous staff, who displayed a somewhat subdued yet very welcoming demeanor, were eager to  please and show me around on my way to my room. The bed was very comfortable  as was the fully outfitted bathroom. Overall, the  space was ample, quiet and nicely furnished with a touch of old world charm accented by dark wood and burgundy bed linens.  I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the window shutters that revealed an awe inspiring view of the lovely courtyard below, which no doubt, added to  to the overall peaceful feeling that you get from  staying in a what once was a convent.

This all around  inspiring  structure showcases magnificent tall ceilings, stone stairs, arched walkways and, of course, the sunny  courtyard with its soothing fountain in the center where a generous buffet breakfast is served every morning from  8 to 10:30 am. Another enchanting feature of this seductive pousada is its swimming pool area.  An oasis of pure relaxation, surrounded by remnants of old castle walls and a pristine landscape dotted with cedar trees keeping up with the inn’s angelical allure. The comfortable lounge chairs and umbrellas, that surround the blue mosaic lined pool, are a nice invitation to relax that is well complemented by  the prompt and attentive restaurant service that, no doubt,  will keep you satisfied with a lovely menu of cocktails and snacks all day. I could’ve easily stayed there from early morning to late night.

In-house dining is an option at the Mouraria  restaurant serving local specialties  like Cataplana ( a delicious Algarvian fish stew) or the lamb rack with almond crust. A generous offering of desserts like the traditional regional sweets made with almonds and eggs and the chocolate and chestnut semi-fredo.  Also, on the premises you’ll find sophisticated Spa facilities that render an ample selection of massages and facials.

One thing that I really appreciated about this hotel was the staff’s attention to detail and their discreet demeanor. I never felt bothered by anyone and when I needed help, I got it immediately. There was none of the false sense of friendliness you often get at other luxury hotels. You are left alone and that is priceless.
